5 THINGS YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE SUPER BOWL

On Sunday, February 2, there's a good chance you and I—and millions of others—will be doing exactly the same thing. We'll all be tuned into Fox Network watching the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs battle for the title of NFL Champions from South Florida as we devour queso dip, wings, and the usual Super Bowl snacks. Many of us have traditions on that Sunday we deem a holiday; meeting up with friends, sporting our respective team’s jersey, showcasing a crowd-dazzling 14-layer bean dip, and so on. But as familiar as this Sunday may seem, there are a few things you may not know about the Super Bowl. 
 
  1. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the only day we consume more food than we do on Super Bowl Sunday is Thanksgiving. So dig into those wings, double-dip the ranch, and go for that second (or sixth, we won't judge) slice of pizza. The rest of the 100 billion viewers will be right there with you, cheering with our mouths full.

  2. The average cost of a ticket for the first-ever Super Bowl, which was in 1967, cost just $12. If we adjust for inflation, that would be about $86 dollars today. And the event still didn't sell out! If you were to buy an average-priced ticket to Super Bowl LIV, you'd be spending between $2,200-$2,500! Can you imagine the price of sideline tickets?

  3. According to Space.com, in 2010, the coin used in the coin flip to determine home and away teams for the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts had previously spent 11 days orbiting the Earth on a NASA space mission. Now that's a high coin toss.

  4. The injuries aren't limited to just those on the field. EHSToday says that between a spike in drunk and distracted drivers, fights between fans, and viewers not getting up to use the restroom for fear of missing the game and the much-anticipated commercials, results in higher than normal visits to the ER.

  5. Each team gets 108 footballs — half for practices leading up to the game, the other half for use during the game. The words "Commissioner," "Wilson" and "Made in the U.S.A" have been imprinted on every single Wilson Super Bowl game football since day one!
